The Growlers Set to Bring Debauchery Down Under / by Jack Gobbe

They may come from the sun-bleached land of California, but The Growlers can’t help but admire the rowdy and underground Australian music scene. The LA surf-punk band are set to embark on their biggest headline tour to date next month, playing twelve shows of debauchery along the golden east coast.

Joining their rolling circus are fellow LA psych-rockers Starcrawler, who will make their Australian debut fresh off the release of their second record ‘Devour You’, an album with the kind of grit you can’t help but to mosh to.

The Growlers themselves are bringing the new-wave punk sounds of their recent album ‘Natural Affair’ down under. Fuelled by the idiosyncrasies of growing up in an ever-evolving world, The Growler’s distinct ‘beach goth’ sound is elevated by reverb-laden disco fit for the Australian summer. With a discography that has gradually evolved from rolling surf-rock to frolicking new-wave punk, The Growlers aren’t afraid to embrace their experimental side.

No strangers to Australia, frontman Brooks Nielsen spoke to Beat recently on his admiration for Australia’s music scene, saying that “It really feels like our early shows when we were at home. Just [that] surfer kids’ scene, a lot of DIY house parties, young kids, it really feels similar in Australia. And rowdy. We’ve done this for a long time and I just wanna keep it interesting, keep it weird and keep it entertaining for our fans. I want them to count on it.”

The Growlers kick off their biggest Aussie tour yet on Saturday 4th January, cruising down the east coast throughout the month. Be sure to grab tickets here before they disappear. In the meantime, get acquainted with their latest record.
